Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has arrived at the count centre in Louth as it emerged that he may be on course to top the poll.
With around 60% of the boxes opened, an unofficial cross-party tally showed Mr Adams on 22% of first preference votes.
These figures put him almost 3% ahead of Fergus O'Dowd of Fine Gael.
Mr Adams said it was too early to say how many seats the party would win overall.
"Sinn Fein are doing well. We only want a mandate to bring about change," he said.
Political correspondent Gareth Gordon said the Sinn Fein President was surrounded by media on his arrival at the count centre.
He said Mr Adams thanked the people who worked for the party and voted for them, but added that there was lot of hard work to do.
An exit poll conducted by RTE indicated that Sinn Fein won 10.1% of the poll - the party's highest ever result.
In November last year the Sinn Fein President announced his decision to step down as MP for West Belfast and stand for election in the Irish Republic.
