Ukrainian ex-President Leonid Kuchma has told reporters he has been charged, hours after being quizzed over the murder of a journalist in 2000.

He did not specify the charge. Prosecutors opened a case against him on Tuesday on suspicion of a role in the killing of Georgy Gongadze.

Gongadze was found beheaded months after being abducted in September 2000, when Mr Kuchma was in power.

The ex-president earlier denied any part in his death.

"I have been charged," Mr Kuchma said after emerging from new questioning in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Thursday.

He was then driven away by car.
