MSPs are to vote on the final stage of scrapping NHS prescription charges in Scotland, an SNP pledge at the 2007 Scottish Parliament elections.
The Scottish government needs the approval of Holyrood's health committee to remove the current £3 charge.
But the Conservatives are making a last ditch to block the plans.
The price paid by patients for prescription medicine has been reduced each year since 2008 and a final vote will see charges removed in April.
Labour supports the plan but the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats believe the cash could be better spent on other things.
Tory health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon will try to block the move at the health committee.
But with her only support coming from the sole Lib Dem member, the SNP's pledge to abolish prescription charges in April will be given the green light.
Wales and Northern Ireland have already removed NHS prescription charges.
The cost of a prescription in England is £7.20 per item.
